Let's get started!
First and Foremost |
Get permission to run Power of Change at your school: generally, this involves talking to any one of the following people – principal, dean of activities, teacher/advisor, National Honor Society advisor, or class council advisor. Keep in mind that if neither NHS nor class council endorses Power of Change, you can still run Power of Change with the help of a small group of friends. It’s better to get NHS endorsement so that all your time for Power of Change can also be counted as NHS hours but no worries if NHS says no. To explain Power of Change, use our official website at www.power-of-change.weebly.com or powerpoint presentation (see documents page). For the most part, the official adult will be supportive, give permission, and you’ll be ready to go. So, set up that appointment now!
At the meeting, explain Power of Change, set dates for launch, discuss how you want to make collections, and get permission to hang posters. |
NEXT: Set Dates And Decide how to collect |
Given how busy junior year can be, we suggest running Power of Change in the fall before all the stress of standardized testing, academics, other activities gets too crazy. October/November seemed to be the most successful time frame last year. Run for three weeks or longer (up to you). You can also set winter or spring dates if you prefer.
Each school is different, so decide what method of coin collection is easiest for you. Use jars, shoe boxes, water jugs, milk cartons, envelopes, ziplock bags or any other recyclable container for collecting coins. Lexington High put a small collection jar in each classroom for coins to be collected during homeroom time. LHS teachers were asked to set out jars and then hold for safe-keeping until the next homeroom day. Pentucket High had huge containers designated by year (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior) for class competition. Ursuline Academy had additional "dress down" day collection to spur more donations. Other schools had collections only at lunch time in the cafeteria or in the hallways/lobbies. These are ideas only. Do whatever works for your school. Be creative! See photos below from last year for more ideas. Templates with Power of Change logos and posters are available for your use (see documents page). |
