Student Leader CheckList
1. Become familiar with the Power of Change principles and mission. Go to http://power-of-change.weebly.com/ for information.
2.“Like” Power of Change Facebook page. Ask your friends and classmates to do so as well. Updates, information and other communication will be posted to Facebook. When your campaign is under way, please send photos so that they can be uploaded to the Facebook page. It’ll be fun to see photos of you and your classmates in action. Plus, the photos will help foster hype and momentum to spur more generous giving!
3. Decide on how you wish to set up coin collection at your school: you will need to assemble some coin containers for your donations. Suggestions: collect Snapple/Nantucket Juice bottles, V8 bottles, spaghetti sauce jars, small boxes, water jugs, milk cartons, shoe boxes etc. to serve as coin containers. One container should be placed in each homeroom or public area. Depending on the size of your school and whether you use every classroom, you’ll probably need around 100 small jars for a large public school or 20-30 for a small private school. If you can’t collect enough small jars by launch, use zip lock bags or extra-large envelopes. Alternatively, if perhaps two or three huge bottles/boxes would work better for your individual school, then you could do that instead. We have a limited number of pre-printed collection boxes, so if you live in a school near Lexington, you can come get those from us. For schools which don’t have homerooms, you might consider putting coin containers in public areas like lobby, classrooms, dining halls, chapel or auditorium. Basically, you want the coin containers in places where the school gathers for daily announcements or other daily activities.
4.After you have enough recyclables, affix Power of Change labels to your coin containers. Templates are available for download on this website (click on Templates for your Use tab). Print out and wrap containers or glue on ziplock bags. Make sure the name of the school on the label is correct. Don’t worry about the glue residue when you rip off the Snapple/juice labels. That stickiness helps secure the new Power of Change labels. Place coin containers in homerooms or other public areas.
5.Just before launch, repurpose the poster template from the documents page on this website. Hang posters around your school. Double check that the school name on the poster is correct.
6.If your school has homeroom announcements on homeroom days, use the sample announcement blurb. If your school has a website for announcements, post as appropriate. Work with your school’s webmaster or ask your principal/school advisor on how to get these announcements up and running.
7.Tell friends and students to use social media (text, email, twitter, snapchat etc.) to challenge each other to give 50 ¢ to Power of Change. Be creative in drumming up interest for this cause.
8.Emphasize that this is a school-to-school challenge with multi-high school participation. The goal is to meet or beat other schools’ collections. If your high school is small, then the goal is high participation or the highest giving per student. A tally list of donations by school will be put on Power of Change’s website so that you can keep track of your school’s contribution as it relates to other schools. Please don’t be discouraged by the size of your school, every coin helps!
9.Once collection period is over, count all the coins collected. You must do this manually and wrap all coins for deposit purposes. Power of Change has an account with TD Bank. You can go to TD Bank or any other local bank to request an assortment of coin wrappers. Most banks will provide these wrappers at no charge. Once all the coins have been wrapped and the bills stacked by denomination, if you have a TD Bank in your area, you may email us for Power of Change's bank account number. Fill out a deposit slip, take the money to the teller and make a deposit. Alternatively, if there is no TD Bank near you, please exchange the donations with a parent or teacher for a check payable to Power of Change. Please mail the check to Power of Change. We’ll provide a mailing address when ready. Amounts collected from each school will be consolidated into one big check to be sent to local food banks or if there is a specific beneficiary that you wish to designate, let us know.
